Changing Contours of Diplomacy

On November 29, 2002, WISCOMP initiated its diplomacy initiative with a Roundtable on the Changing Contours of Diplomacy. This broad encompassing event that drew together diplomats from many tracks of diplomacy ranging from parliamentarians and Ministry of External Affairs diplomats to NGO, business, and media leaders. WISCOMP believed that an inclusive dialogue would not only reflect the numerous changing contours of diplomacy but also their integrated and overlapping nature. The Roundtable was designed to raise a cluster of issues that would answer the questions: who is a diplomat today and what are the myriad processes the new diplomats navigate?  It further seemed that bringing together a broad array of diplomats might also illuminate points of tension and points of cooperation already existent amongst the various tracks- an illumination which might indicate areas of possibility for building synergies and partnerships in the future.

The sessions were built on the thematic lines of the theoretical and experiential issues entrenched in the changing contours, the challenges of post 9/11 and economic negotiations with gender and multi-track processes as important issues to be addressed within the fabric of the presentations. WISCOMP believed that the interplay that might occur as a result of the blended nature of the sessions would reflect the interconnected reality of the issues. The Round Table was designed to provide diplomats from different tracks of diplomacy an opportunity to understand the perspectives of other diplomats addressing similar issues in different ways. The idea was that their enhanced understandings would cultivate new relationships and facilitate cooperation.

Diplomats from many tracks of diplomacy presented a very illuminative picture of the factors changing the contours of diplomacy in the world today. A principal question WISCOMP sought to address was -In what ways can diplomats further integrate their efforts to forge a holistic –gender sensitive- approach to security by building on the foundations they share? This initial Round Table represented a first step in this process. WISCOMP looks forward to delving deeper into the possibilities of building synergy among diplomats in upcoming discussions.
