Breaking the Silence: Women in
Kashmir
In
December 2000, WISCOMP organized a Roundtable titled, "Breaking the
Silence: Women and Kashmir”. The Roundtable was conceived as an
interface between those who are concerned and those who are affected by the
ongoing conflict in Kashmir. Therefore it was broadly divided into two sections-
“Perspectives On Kashmir” and “Perspectives from Kashmir”. While the
first The
roundtable aimed at providing a context
within which the issues and concerns of the women of Kashmir could be
articulated and communicated to a wider audience outside the valley.
Providing this context was particularly important, as women's issues
cannot be viewed in isolation - as something apart from the ongoing conflict,
which had generated these special concerns to begin with. Just as any meaningful
process of conflict resolution must be preceded by conflict analysis in the same
way understanding the problem in Kashmir from various angles is the prerequisite
if the women of Kashmir have to take initiatives to repair the current fractured
and fractious nature of Kashmiri civil society and engage in efforts to bring
back peace with justice in the valley. With this in mind the initial sessions of
the roundtable sought to analyze the seeds of the insurgency movement in Kashmir
-highlight the challenges of women reporting from an area of conflict-and
examine the issues of religious and regional identities and notions of
Kashmiriyat.
